Kilmoyley Miler 5K & 10K 2014

It was a short trip to this local race on a beautiful summers day. On Sunday, 29 June 2014 we had the pleasure of taking part in the  Kilmoyley 5K & 10K Fun Race. It  was the second year of this event and the introduction of the 10K distance (2 loops of the traditional 5K route) and also gave the option of registration for the race on the evening of the day before so many locals arrived at the starting line ready to go. Organising committee  took notice from last year where a lot of people arrived very late and the start was delayed for a good while. No such issues this time around, all started on time in great, relaxing and friendly atmosphere with many families taking part and a large group of walkers enjoying the day.

Kilmoyley Tidy Towns did a great job as organisers with plenty of stewards at every crossroads, nicely spaced water stations and one of the best after race spreads we have ever had the pleasure to attend. Thanks to all positive feedback, this event should be on most runners/joggers/walkers calendar for years to come.

For many of our club members this was a good preparation for Banna 10K & 5K Road Race in 4 weeks time and we had a large turnout (over 20 members) which is nice to see.
In 5K race Ursula Barrett placed highest of St.Brendan's AC, finishing in excellent 2nd position and Ann McGlynn finishing 1st local Lady in her second race in as many days.
In 10K race Pat Sheehy was the only one from St. Brendan's,  placing in top 10 overall.

Camp 10 Mile Trail Run 2014

This was the first edition of the "Camp Trail Run" organised by Run The Kingdom company.
The 10 mile distance was a mixture of running surfaces, ranging from road, trail, gravel and even a bit of grass and river crossing with over 400m of ascent it was not a typical 10 miler by any means.
If you look closely at the elevation chart, it's hard to find any flat area longer then 50m so all hill running experience was put to good use. Route was well marked and marshaled at every junction with a few water stations, much appreciated on a hot day.
This whole event was a big success with participants commenting on a great experience, views and how tough it was (in this order) and it has a big potential to attract much more competitors, both runners and walkers and potentially more teams like outstanding "Rambo Babes" from Born To Run.

St.Brendan's AC made this a day to remember for the club with Derek Griffin winning the race in a great time of 1:06:44, Artur Nowak finishing  2nd in his age category (9th overall) with time of 1:22:29 and Ann McGlynn winning her age category (7th overall female) finishing in 1:37:34.

Top 3 Men:
1.Derek Griffin (St.Brendan's AC) - 1:06:44
2.Mike Sheehy                           - 1:08:58
3.Brian Redmond                        - 1:10:11

Top 3 Women:
1.Denise Twohig                       - 1:17:46
2.Deidre Enright (An Riocht)      - 1:20:41
3.Mary Beasley                         - 1:24:17

Next year event has already been planned for 27 June 2015.

MUNSTER T&F CHAMPIONSHIPS SENIOR & MASTER 2014

The Munster T&F took place at the Cork IT track on Sunday 15th June 2014.  PJ Galvin was the senior athlete in attendance & Artur Nowak was the club’s master entrant.

Both did very well medalling in their events.  PJ was 1st in the senior high jump which he cleared at a height of 1.90m.  Artur also came 1st in his Master’s category high jump (new PB 1.63m and new Munster record in M40 category), 3rd in his 200m & 3rd in the javelin.
A very good day for both men as it must have been hard competing on one of the hotter days of the year so far.

OPEN SPORTS & BARBECUE 2014

St. Brendan’s AC would like to say thank you to both the hurling & football clubs for giving us permission to use the sports field for our annual open sports on Monday 2nd June 2014.  A great turnout from various clubs outside of Kerry including St. Mary’s of Rathkeale, who once again won the shield for best visiting club.  West Muskerry & UL had representatives there as did many clubs from Kerry such as An Ríocht, Farranfore/Maine Valley, Spa/Muckross, Listowel & Tralee Harriers.  There were many races from tiny tots to u15 & the family relay race which was very exciting, as it was a very closely contested race in the end!  But the most fun to be had was with the novelty moms & dads races ("Power Run") which were set by club coach Artur Nowak.  The adults had great fun negotiating weights whilst running & the children thoroughly enjoyed watching their parents participating also!!

That evening the end of year barbecue was held at the retreat centre by kind permission of the nuns.  A lovely fun filled evening was had by all children, parents & coaches.  St Brendan’s club awards were also presented on the night.  Thank you to all coaches & parents for their help during the year.  But most especially thank you to the children for participating during the year be it at training or competition.  Athletics has now finished for the year but we look forward to seeing you again in November.
