Road Running/Endurance Workshop

Road Running/Endurance Workshop will take place on Wednesday 7th December 2011 (7-9pm) in Castleisland Co. Kerry. All workshops will run as per usual with payment taken on the night €5 and taken up to 5 mins before workshop start time.

This workshop is suitable for all athletes/coaches aged 17+ and also all Fit4Life/Triathlon groups. The topics on the night will cover all levels of ability and there will also be 30 mins for questions & answers on any endurance topic.

Topics to be covered include:
- Different Types of Endurance Training
- Recovery Methods
- Use of Heart Rate Monitor
- Training for 5km/10km/Marathon
- General Running Tips
- Questions & Answers

Munster Squad Day Saturday 3rd December Cork IT

1st squad sessions of the 2011/2012 season take place this Saturday at Cork IT.






The younger squad for u13-u15 athletes will run from 10am-12.15pm with registration at 9.30am sharp. All u13-u15 athletes must bring €5 with them and sign in at registration. This is open to all AAI registered athletes born 1999, 1998, 1997.


The older squad for u16-u20 athletes will run from 12.45pm-3.30pm with registration at 12.15pm sharp. This squad has 85 athletes selected and notified by post. Under no circumstances are any clubs to send athletes to this squad that have not been selected. As always all personal coaches are very welcome to attend both squads.

Coach Education courses

Coach Education courses for September-December 2011 taking place in Cork/Kerry/Limerick/Tipperary region, are now available on the new AAI online application system. All course applicants must now apply online and courses close 3 days before course start date. Please make sure you fill in all information requested and provide a valid e-mail address. This e-mail address will be use to send exact course details to you 3 days before the start date.
Under no circumstances will course applications be accepted in any other manner, only the online system is to be used. Please can all clubs make sure all coaches/parents etc are aware of this new system and that they apply online well in advance of course start dates.

New Regional Squad System for Munster

Athletes selected on the 'Performance Squad' will be notified by post early next week and the 'Development Squad' is open to all athletes u13-u15 in 2011 age groups. Any athletes who have achieved a major championships standard are not eligible for the 'Performance Squad' as it it is aimed at those below this level. These athletes are catered for at National Squads.

More details of the 1st squad day on Saturday December 3rd at Cork IT will be sent to clubs and put on websites closer to the date.

There will be an experienced Head Coach for each event with support from some
assistant coaches and personal coaches. Personal coaches and any coaches in

The main criteria for picking this elite group are:

1) The athlete has represented Ireland in club or school competition in

2010 or 2011 but especially 2011

2) The athlete has finished in the top 3 in a National Outdoor T&F

Championships school or club in 2010 or 2011 but especially 2011.
3) The athlete should be close to or capable of getting very close to
a European Youth or European Junior qualifying time as set out in
attached document.

Application Process:

Athletes selected by head event coach and regional development officer and invited
to confirm place and register online. Full details of athletes selected will be sent to
all clubs and to athlete’s parents.
Athletes to pay a total fee of €25 online that covers all sessions and fill in online
sheet giving contact details for parents and personal coach

Sports Psychology Workshop

Sports Psychology Workshop
Castleisland, Co.Kerry Wednesday 23rd November

There will be a Sports Psychology workshop taking place for athletes & coaches at An Riocht AC Track, Castleisland Co Kerry on Wednesday 23rd November. It is open to all athletes & coaches aged 14+. The workshop runs from 7-9pm and cost is €5 payable on the night at registration 6.30-6.55pm. The workshop begins at 7pm sharp so everyone is asked to be on time.

The workshop will be run by Dr Alan Ringland who is an expert in the field, having worked with numerous different sports. Alan is also an accredited Sports Psychologist with the Irish Institute of Sport.

The primary objectives of the workshops will be:

- To introduce sport psychology
- To emphasise the importance of mental training as part of the overall holistic approach to athletics
- To highlight the importance of mental routines as part of pre competition preparation
- To discuss sports psychology as part of a coaching program
- To learn competition day anxiety coping techniques
