September 2015 Road Races updates

September was another busy month for St.Brendan's AC members with some of our athletes travelling to such exotic places as Cork & Kildare.

19.09.2015 - Parkrun Tralee no.34
Zach Walshe (1st in age category). Congratulations to Zach on completing his 10th Parkrun Tralee!

19.09.2015 - Killarney Women's Mini Marathon
The promise of ice cream, doughnuts and brownies at the finish line tempted a good few of our club ladies for this well organised and supported event in Killarney. Due to floods in some parts of Killarney National Park, the route was altered with 5K loop for shorter distance and 2 loops (5K each) for 10K.
10K - Cathy Quilter, Margaret Carlin, Yvonne Quill, Catherine Burke, Kirstie Nowak, Ann McGlynn, Norma O'Dowd, Nora Falvey
5K - Shannon Quill (4th overall), Mags Hussey, Ella Brosnan & Brendan O'Sullivan.

20.09.2015 - Charleville Half Marathon (Munster Athletics Championships)
Very difficult weather conditions for this event did not stop St.Brendan's AC trio of Derek, Cathy and Margaret with some impressive results as all our athletes achieved new PB's.
Looks like marathon training is going according to plan - Cathy and Margaret will take part in SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon (AAI National Marathon Championships) in October and Derek will be one of over 50000 participants to run in the TCS New York City Marathon in November.
Derek Griffin - 15th overall and 4th in Munster Championships with new club record (1:13:11)
Margaret Carlin - 2nd in age category & new PB
Cathy Quilter - new PB

26.09.2015 - Killarney 10 Mile
This was the second year of this event organised as a fundraiser to build 200m micro track in Killarney. With lots of other events happening in Kerry over that weekend it was still a well supported event with many club runners from Kerry, Cork & Limerick taking part.
Thanks to Killarney Valley AC (formally Spa Muckross AC) for hosting this event and all volunteers who helped out on the day.
St.Brendan's AC had Kirstie Nowak, Ann McGlynn & Artur Nowak (90min pacer) taking part.

26.09.2015 - Parkrun Tralee no.35

26.09.2015 - Toughathlon (Cork)
Well done to Brian Lucid on completing yet another multi-obstacle event. Once again Brian took on and finished in style Toughathlon in Cork.

26.09.2015 - Seven Frogs Triathlon, Castlegregory
End of season event in Maharees got great weather conditions for this charity triathlon event. Congratulation to Dermot Dillane on finishing in top 20 in sprint category.

27.09.2015 - Naas 10K
David Butler moved his training base camp closer to Dublin for the weekend in the hope that this will give him "the edge" when he will enter final stage of his Dublin marathon training. We have no doubt that his first effort in the Dublin marathon will leave him breathless (at some stage).
Fortunately for him, he came with his wife, Irene to this 10K event in Naas to monitor his progress.

27.09.2015 - Tralee CBS 5K/3K
In its first fundraising event for Tralee CBS School we had a mixture of youth and experience representing St.Brendan's AC. Well done to Shannon Quill, Yvonne Quill, Moira Lynch Horgan, Aaron (2nd in 3K) & Kevin Horgan.

Killarney Mini Marathon 2014

Another edition of this highly popular race event took place in great weather conditions on Saturday, 20 September 2014.
Among the large number of cross dressers, doughnut lovers and ice cream connoisseurs, were quite a few runners tackling the 10K distance or, new for this year, 5K fun run/walk.

From start to finish there was a great atmosphere at this event. This included walking to the start line behind some very talented bagpipers (who later participated in the race). There were many ladies participating in their first 5/10K race and there was great encouragement to these from all corners, hopefully ensuring that it was only the first of many races for them.

This was a well organised event. With an entry price of €25 which included a very stylish and good quality pink t-shirt, unusual and attractive finishers medal, doughnuts and Murphy's icecream, it was certainly good value.  There was excellent marshaling on the route, with signs erected at various points offering words of encouragement to the runners. There was even a couch at around the 7K mark offering Dawn Milk!

As usual, St. Brendan's AC was well represented in both races,  with the first finisher of the 5K being the Club's very own Shannon Quill. Another club member who completed the 5K was Joan Reil Burke, opting for walk this time.

The 10K saw Ursula Barrett finishing in 16 position overall (highest club place) with Ann McGlynn following close behind. Other club members to complete the 10K were Mags Hussey, Kirstie Nowak, Eileen Leen, Noreen Leen, Catherine Burke, Nora Falvey & Yvonne Quill.

Most of these ladies have been training over the summer months with the Club Fit4Life running group and it was great to see them doing themselves proud and getting good, well earned results on Saturday.

Killarney Women's Mini Marathon 2013

The annual "Murphy's Ice Cream" race A.K.A "Dawn Lite Milk Killarney Women's Mini Marathon" is a 10K event on the roads of Killarney town and National Park. With warm weather on Saturday, 14 September it was clear that this would be a RACE - who would be first to the finish line to get full choice of ice cream flavours before they started melting down and who would have to drown their sorrows in pints of Dawn Milk.

There were over 600 women taking part (most of them females....!) with support acts from a few brave men running for Pieta House charity and fulfilling the role of pacers.
In this very well organised fundraising event, the honours of picking all the ice cream flavours went to An Riocht trio of Niamh O'Sullivan (37:11), Siobhan Daly (40:53) and Mary O'Connor (41:38).

Leading St.Brendan's AC "Women Elite Pro Performance Team" was Ann McGlynn, followed by Mags Hussey,  Eileen Leen, Joan Reil Burke, Catherine Burke, Norma Shanahan, Noreen Leen and Chris O'Shea. All participants received a lovely medal and nice tech t-shirt, not to mention large helpings of frozen delight as in picture below.
Well done to all St.Brendan's AC ladies taking part in this great event.
